Our story

Who are the people behind Organic food 8?

Georgios Efstratiou was a professional diver and diving instructor. He owned a diving school in the historic town of Marathon, now run by his son. If you are into diving check the Divers Club - Marathon Bay.

Christina Kitsopoulou lived and studied in Switzerland. She moved to Greece where she worked in the sales department of a company making hand made furniture. Unfortunately the company closed in 2011 due to the economical crisis as did many other companies in Greece.

In 2003 Georgios was diagnosed with Melanoma, a kind of skin cancer. After a couple of operations and the necessary therapy, we started seeing our lives and the world around us from a new perspective. We realised the importance of the environment we live in and of the way we treat our bodies. As Hippocrates said "let food be your medicine and medicine be your food".

What led us to create Organic food 8?

For five years we followed six month seminars at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Apiculture (beekeeping), Organic farming, Arboriculture, Horticulture, Viticulture & Oenology, Small Rural Industries, Landscape Architecture, Mediterranean Diet and Agricultural product conservation, packaging and trade.

We used the knowledge we acquired during those five years to make some products of our own but also make better choices as informed consumers. Now, ten years after our adventure with cancer and in great health, we felt the need to share this knowledge the best way we could. And that's what led us to create Organic food 8.

Some questions

During all these years we've been around on this planet, we have seen many changes. The colour of the sky: it is not so blue as it used to be. The see bottom is filled with more trash every year, fish have become scarce. Even the air we breathe has changed. What kind of planet do we want our children to inherit from us? What kind of food will be available for the next generations? Genetically modified made by private multinational companies for half the planet and nothing for the other half?

All people should have some fundamental rights on this earth. We should have the right to live in a clean environment and breathe unpolluted air. We should have the right to clean water. We should have the right to consume food which is good for our health. We should have the right to know where our food comes from, how it is produced and what it contains. We should have the right to live our lives the way we choose to. Do you feel these basic rights are respected? We do not.
